I have a 1996 Ford Explorer and when I stomp on the gas as it is picking up in the higher speeds I hear a rattle or some type of engine noise. What could this be? Any suggestions?

NOISE

IF IT IS A SOHC IT COULD BE THE CAM TENSIONERS. IT MIGHT HAVE A RECALL. I JUST GOT MY REPLACED

Noise

1996 Ford Explorer - It does not do it all the time (75%) The dealer ship can not find anything? It is in the engine and sound like something is loose but I only hear it when I have the gas floored. I tried different types of gas and oils but no effect. IDEAS ARE WELCOME>

Sounds like you are experiencing "pinging" by what you describe. Your 1996 is an OHV and does not have the cam tensioners.

You may want to try several things:

1. Clean the MAS (Mass Air Sensor) - there are a lot of threads concerning this and there are instructions in the tips section at Cleaning the MAS.

2. Fuel System Cleaner - again, a lot of threads about this with recommendations. I use AMSOIL Performance Improver (PI) religiously. It will restore 95% of fuel injector flow with the first treatment and help improve performance and fuel mileage.

3. Clean the upper air intake system - try AMSOIL Power Foam. Use per the directions on the can. It will remove the carbon build up that may be responsible for your pinging. It will also help restore lost performance. It's worked very well for me.

Do a search on "pinging" and you'll find a lot of very useful info. Hope this helps.
