I have been hearing a high pitched noise, kinda like a squeak when I start off from a complete stop in my X. It souds like it's coming from the front end, but it's hard to tell. I have been visiting this site frequently since I found it (BS, I come here every chance I get) and I have seen how you guys (and Gals) have helped others with thier questions. I want to start doing some mods to my truck, but I want to make sure everything is OK with it before I start tinkering around in there. If it helps, I have a 98 Explorer Sport 4.0 V-6 SOHC auto, 4-hi, 4-lo, 5-speed manual transmission, stock tranny, no lifts, 455/70R16 Michilin LTX W/X tires. Also, I have noticed that the dash lights for the 4-hi and 4lo will blink every few minutes, but the 4WD is engaging properly,
Thanks in Advance

Just an FYI, you have the 160 HP OHV, not the SOHC.

He has a '98 doesn't that mean he has a SOHC?

Anyway, I had the same problem as you, squeeking on acceleration from 0-25 MPH. Sounds like your u-joints are bad.

Nope all explorers with manual trannies from 91-2000 had the OHV 4.0L.

im pretty sure you could also have an ohv with an automatic in 98, too (in addition to what jason25 said.)

Well yes sure you can have an OHV in the X with an auto, but this guy has a manual which is ONLY with the OHV until 2002 in the re-design :D

Oh wait, doh! I didn't see you were quoting a guy who didn't know the OHV came in the 2nd Gen Explorer. Sorry, my mistake. That post will be edited.

Glad we could help you here Crazy!!:D

My first guess for a whine at take-off; belt is slipping. Does it sound kinda like a belt slipping, or another type of sound?

I had a similar issue with mine and it turned out that it was a stuck parking brake, I thought it might be a U joint or a belt as well. I was very surprised.

Thanks for the info on the engine specs, as for the sound, it doesn't sound like a belt, more of a metal on metal rub

I also have that SAME squeel, and I have a 2000 Sport, automatic though, it's pretty close to the sound of the disc brake sensor when your pads are low, you know that squeel sound.

It only does it at very low speeds, 5-20 mph and then it goes away at higher speeds, or when I hit the brakes. But it is not the brakes, I had them checked. It doesn't do this all of the time, only sometimes.

Anyone have anymore ideas for my Marine friend and I?

Oh, and BTW, the problem you are having most likely the dust seals on the front hub assemblies. :)

There is a TSB on the problem.

What specifically are the dust shields, and how would they cause a high pitched squeal? And would that be covered under warranty?

I'm almost certain that the problem is the dust seals. I had the same problem and it didn't stop until ford replaced them, which wasn't covered by my warrenty. It appears to be a fairly common problem. Do a search and you can find some more info about it.
