I have noticed that my 07 V8 explorer has this metal grinding sound. Not exactly grinding but more like constant wooooooo when i drive it. I had the trans fluid changed by dealer 10k ago. The noise comes at any speed but goes away at certain speed. For example..even at 30mph, i can hear it. It's there at 55mph and goes away at 62mph but comes right back at about 65mph. there's no code light. about 2 months ago, the dealer replaced my fuel line and charcoal canister. The car rides fine but the noise really bothers me. Anyone got any idea what that might be? My warranty expires in 7k...i just want to have it fixed if there's any pending problem. thanks

edit, my car is 2007 explorer V8 2WD

I had bad tires do this before. Try rotating and/or balancing the tires.

How about a loose heat sheild on the exhaust system?

what does the heat shield look like? i will take a look tomorrow. I thought about tires but the noise would go away at 60.. thanks guys for responding

Bearings ???

Since you are still covered by warranty and the noise can be demonstrated consistantly at some speeds, I would take the car to your dealer for a diagnosis. It is much easier to diagnose the problem when actually in the vehicle.

If the problem is covered by warranty then all is well. If not covered then you have a professional diagnostic and there is probably a lot of help here for you to fix the problem yourself.

As you can see from the responses, there are a lot of possibilities and it takes time to check them all out. In the meantime your warranty is running out.

Good luck.

If it were an AWD, I would offer that it could be the front diff. Mine makes a noise like that, and I am suspecting a pinion bearing. It's funny, when I first got it, it made all sorts of bad noises. As I replace things, the noise reduces a little each time. Still have 2 bearings to replace and the diff to overhaul and hopefully I can drive in quiet. Just have to convince the nice extended warranty people.

Good luck with convincing the warranty people. It seems if the repair is over $1,000 they want to send an adjuster and call it previously existing condition. I am convinced that putting some money in a repair fund of your own choosing is more profitable then spending a bunch of money upfront for an insurance policy. If they didn't make a bunch of money on warranties, they wouldn't offer them.

so far i have no problem since warranty is thru ford cuz i got it as certified preown. i just dont have time to do it lately. I will have it done in december. Thanks everyone. Just too many possibilities...might as well just have them look at it.

update, it's fixed under warranty. it was bearing and hub on the right side. Thanks again guys/.

Any information what bearing they installed?
HUB29 or HUB67? Do you have a part number?
I'm still wondering what's the difference between HUB29 and HUB67, which are both offered from rockauto.com for the 2007 Explorer.

i will look at the service receipt when i get a chance

It's probably a HUB 29 they installed. I don't think there's any difference between Hub 29 and HUB 67 except that HUB 67 was around for GEN III's and comes with new bolts . My '06 was actually made in 10/05, and most vendors say that HUB 67 will work. I'd like to get the new bolts, and will probably order Hub 67's if I ever do mine.

I've got a nice Whooooooing going on, but can't determine if it's the hub(s) or not. I've tried diagnosing which side it is my turning back and forth when I'm driving, but there doesn't seem to be any change in the sound. When the front bearings went bad in my last X, it was obvious which side it was...the noise stopped completely when I turned to the side. Maybe they're both bad. Guess I'll wait until the abs light comes on...that'll be a good sign that at least one of the bearings is bad, then I'll just have to figure out which one.

BTW, explorer1007, if you don't mind, what did they charge you to furnish and install the hub? Thanks. Ed
