when driving down the road i notice a noise coming from underneath the vehicle like a knocking sound when you let off of the gas it stops after a few seconds checked the drive shafts for play and theres none, went four wheeling and it seemed to have gotten worse only does it when the vehicle is in gear going to change all fluids (front and rear diffs trans. case) and see what that does, also sounds like its coming from the pass. side don't really know where to start after that. any help would be appreciated. Its a 97 X sport 4x4 autotrac

I think the 97 has CV's

either way check the front shafts, I don't think that is your problem since when you let off the gas it goes away. I'll have to give this one some thought.

i dont think its a CV because when i was in 4x4 it wasnt making a clack-a lacking noise just sound like someone is tapping on it with a hammer tic tac tic tac. Ill climb under and inspect them dosent hurt to look.

well, now hold on, if it is a clacking sound, there is a good chance that it is a CV, that is what they sound like when things start to get a little messy in there. Your comment about the sound going away when you let off the gas kinda throws me a little.

not a cv i know what it sounds like when ones broken 4x4 was working fine in the mud no noise until i got unstuck im leaning towards a ujoint on the driveshaft but theres no play in them
