noises

In the past three weeks my explorer has started to make a clatering noise. Possibly from the cat. I have since used some premium octane fuel, and that has helped. But the car is not recomended to run on this type of gas. This problem only ocurrs during the winter months. Any sugestions?

Crawl underneath your Exploder and check all of the heat shields on the cats. It's common for the spot welds to break. Also, the "Y" pipe has a heat shield on it where it crosses over underneath the oil pan, I have mine secured with a large hose clamp.
