noisy dana 35

Everytime I engage the 4X4 on my 92 Explorer it gives a "crack" noise, and it repeats every 6 t0 15 feet. . A guy at the parts store told me Explorers do that all the time and that it is normal. Please advise, thanks.

4x4 will do that on dry pavement, don't engage 4x4 unless in soft gravel, dirt, mud, etc.

The sound happens on dirt, sand, mud, etc. Any suggestions?

I'd guess it could be hubs, u joints, the driveshaft or the differential itself. It will take some detective work.
