On my 2006 Explorer the gear selector creaks while I'm driving. IT IS EXTREMELY ANNOYING. I certainly can't be alone with this problem. I think I'm going to have to remove the entire center console to deal with this problem but I'm sure I'll be able to "fix" it. My plan is to put a lot of Teflon tape on everything, especially the bottom of the chrome ring.

As best as I can tell, a lot of the noise is coming from the chrome oval-ring around the shifter and perhaps from the black thing that surrounds the shift shaft and keeps stuff from falling down in there (debris shield?).

DOES ANYONE HAVE A SUGGESTION?

The teflon tape is a good idea. I had the same problem years ago and applied some kind of lubricant to it (can't remember the type now). I haven't heard it creak since.

Remove the Chrome ring and see if the noise changes. The ring has 4 tabs that attach to the console.

Thanks. Any just tried spraying WD40 or something else in there?

Don't spray WD40 in there, use a plastic safe precision lubricant like CRC 2-26.
