Thought I'd post here as there seems to be a great deal of knowledgable people in here! Got an 86 Ranger given to me, 2.9 5spd. CANNOT get fuel to the rail. Granted the truck has been sitting for some time, but what are the odds that both in-tank pumps (dual tank truck) are shot at the same time? The high pressure on the frame rail is coming on, but can't hear either of the tank pumps. The selector valve could be shot but I have both tanks nearly half full of fresh gas so it should be pulling from whichever one it's stuck on.

Battery was accidentally hooked up backwards, little puff of smoke from somewhere near the starter solenoid for the 2 seconds it was on there but didn't seem to blow any fuses. Does the fuel pump relay control the high pressure pump as well as the in tanks? Fuseable link perhaps?

Also, the truck does NOT have a canister style filter after the high pressure pump, only the cartridge style in the housing between the selector valve and pump, which I promptly broke trying to remove from the lines. Would it be possible to replace the housing with two canister style filters?

Sorry for all the babbling, but I'm just not too sure where to go from here. I was thinking of just going ahead and replacing the tank pumps, but if there's other areas I should be looking into I'd love to know where to start. I guess I could start with getting 12 volts directly to the pumps to see if they're shot.

Any suggestions?

bypass the selector valve if you think its bad, it should be easy enough to do iirc, but its been a long time since ive messed with a dual pump ford fuel system, so my memory is a bit fuzzy

good call, ive seen weirder things than 2 fuel pumps going out at the same time, you could also test for 12v in the pump wiring on each tank to see if power is even going there at all.

The little bowl thing is a "surge" tank that Ford used for awhile on these things. I don't know if you can "bypass" it or not, but you can get one from the Fseries trucks if nothing else. It allows fuel to be circulated constantly between the tank/high pressure pump/ return line so that the high press. pump is never left "starving" for fuel. I have seen these with AND without filters in them, so ?????? I honestly try to leave them alone unless they are stopped up, since they like to break, as you found out.

It's hooked up using the same connectors as everywhere else in the fuel system, so I'm just going to throw 2 canister style filters in there, 1 for the supply and 1 for the return line, and go from there. Mine had the filter in it and it turned out to be a real nice shade of black when I finally got it open. Felt liked it weighed 5 times as much as it should have too. My guess is that it was the original.

Got a bunch of info after searching the internet for hours on end so before I go and drop the tanks, or just take the bed off, I have some tests to do. Also was given a 1986 Ford Truck wiring diagram book from the local dealership so I can track down any gremlins that might show up.

Well, took the bed off, have power to the pumps but no pumps. Off to Ebay I guess!

Quite surprised actually, but maybe after sitting for so long (8 years!) they just crapped out. I'm going to take them out this next weekend and see if I can't get them working, but found some on Ebay for fairly cheap so will get them coming as well.
