not really powerful

Hmm , idk he seemed pretty certain. Even if it were true the v6 was the only option , then it's still slow and broken? I think I'll just have him put it back to the v8 anyway so I can get my original power back. It would be nice to go on the freeway again. lol

Plus who knows who installed the engine that's in it , They may have done something wrong and it may truly turn into an exploder , don want that lol.

There is no "back" to the v8. You can put in a v8 and it has been done a few times on here.. IIRC 410fortune has done a few of them too.

Well I guess I can ask him to check it again before hand to make sure.

Trust us. There are about 4 generations of Explorers. Here are the engines offered. A V8 isn't even offered till 1997 in the 2nd generation!

1st: '91-'94
4.0 OHV (V6)

2nd: '95-'01
4.0 OHV (V6), 4.0 SOHC (V6), or ('97-'01 only) 5.0 OHV (V8)

3rd: '02-'05

4.0 SOHC (V6) or 4.6 (V8)

4th: '06-'10

4.0 SOHC (V6) or 4.6 (V8)

There was deffinately no V8 offered during the year yours was made. In a lot of peoples opinions, the V6 OHV is too small for the X.. but thats just an opinion. If you were complaining about no power than your mechanic probably just jumped on your "no power V6" opinion too and is trying to rip you off.. That used V8 hes trying to sell you may not be any good either..

Another thing.. How do you know that the engine that is currently in your explorer isn't the original engine from the factory and that someone put a different one in it?

Has this thing been taken in for a tranny flush and filter change? I read all 6 pages, but don't recall coming across this.
I found my 93 Limited (168,000 km's, not too sure what that is in miles) quite sluggish when I got it so I did all the tune-up jazz, and chopped off my cat and while it helped, it still didn't seem right.
I took it to a tranny shop and they did a flush and tightened the bands (which I could have done myself but while they were in there anyway...) and it woke the Ex right up. This is with stock tires and 3.27's. I would look at getting a flush done with the bands, best 300 bucks I ever spent.

in 1996 you could purchaces a 5.0 but only in a 2wd model. In 1997 thats when it became avalable in other forms of drive train.

Ok all an update.

I went back to the mechanic and informed him of this site and all and all of your conclusions about the engine , and asked nicely to prove it had a v8. He was really nice and took me under to hood of my ex and showed me various hoses and wires and large hand made metal brackets that had been sort of jimmy rigged and adapted to fit in my car. He also pointed out that my engine was obviously very small in comparison to the space it occupied , and sure enough it does look far to small , like there's a significant amount of space open. He then showed me the van engine and pointed out how the various metal pieces and hoses and wires and such fit perfectly into my explorer. He MIGHT have been lying , but everything he was saying looked pretty accurate. I mean I'm not dumb but it sure looks like that van engine is suppose to be in there.

I also made a quick trip to our local ford dealer to get a second opinion about the current engine and the possible v8. It sure did take them a long time but they also left me a message stating the engine and car do not match as far as the id codes or something goes. They then said they checked my vin number and said it states the original car was sold with an 8 cylinder engine. When I picked it up I asked about the engine from the purposed econoline van and they said that engine should be roughly the same. They said it would have to be the same exact year to be a perfect match.

So in conclusion I think all in all it was an interesting experience learning about engines and things. Also the previous state of my "modified" explorer. lol. I think I will have to return the engine to it's previous state as I really can't take the slowness of my ex much long. Not to mention the price they offered was pretty decent.

Thanks all for your help!

I said it before, and I'll say it again.. RUN AWAY.....

a v8 was NEVER an option for that year a US built (I'm not going to speak about other countries since I don' tknow) 1991-1994 explorer.

Without pictures, more info, etc, I'm going to call it a day.. If you have the money and trust this "mechanic", go for it and get a v8 put in.

i think your dealer and mechanic are playing a big mean prank on you

If the eighth digit of the VIN is an X it came with a OHV V6.

See: http://www.explorerforum.com/ntrprize/VIN.htm

This just made me think what if someone swapped a 3.0 V6 from a ranger into an Eddie Bauer... or a 2.3 from an ranger. Now those would be painful to drive.

ok.. well i am very intersted in what actually is going on with this thing.. Deamon3, I would greatly apreciate it if you posted some pictures of your current engine. Also, check your VIN number yourself and possibly tell us the first 11 digits of your VIN so that this engine dispute could get cleared up.

intresting... the explorer not a race car

you know... now that this has come to light... im wondering if his X is a 94... many times I have customers come in, and they dont know what year their vehicle is, or many times, mistake the year... the other thing now too that im wondering, is what if the other guy was right, and someone swapped in a 3.0L... all these things... plz deamon3, post some pics of your ex... just a exterior shot and an engine shot, that may clear up alot of things. that and/or just list the 8th digit and 10th digit of the VIN (vehicle identification number, the little metal "tag" in the bottem letf corner of the windshield). 8th is the engine code, 10th is the year.

Hi all another update! I totally forgot about this thread sorry lol.

Ok so it's been a while since I had them go ahead and reinstall the v8. And the performance has definitely improved. It finally drives like a normal car now and I can go on the freeway! yay! lol. Also something interesting to note, my dome light now finally works , and my clicker for the door locks works a lot better now too. It also makes the "bonging" noise now too , lol. But definitely lots more speed now and sounds a lot different too.

I also followed your guys advice and went ahead and checked my own vin number on some online sites and sure enough It does seem to say v8 , or on some sites "8 cylinder". I also went back to the ford dealer (without an apointment I might add lol) and asked why my explorer would have a v8 rather then v6. He said it wasn't uncommon for some cars to have different engines then what were available and that most likely my car was an ex government vehicle. He said my horn was completely gone and the wires for it ran to nothing , and there was a spot on the floor of my car that looked like something was mounted but then removed.

So all in all thanks for all the help guys! Although you guys had me worried there was a conspiracy in all my local shops for a while there! lol.

Just a suggestion: Id get a carfax report on your VIN. Its true, the state police in Nevada used exploders for a short time prior to going to Expeditions, And IF they didnt come with V8's, they would have had them installed. But, get a carfax and then your questions will be answered.
