So i looked at a ranger tonight to replace my explorer, it is a 98 3.0 5spd, 4x4 (real 4x4 not the auto crap) with manual hubs, total stripped down model, supercab, runs like a top but has 244k miles.
It has rust, needs new lower half of the rad support, some work on the floor (all solid but rusty, he replaced part of it but put a crappy plastic liner on it which held water on the metal) Underneath is deffinitely rusty. the frame from what i can tell is all very solid, if a little flaky in a couple spots, needs a new gas tank cross member, and the bed isn't in the best shape, some rust, fixable i think, mostly just inner wheel well rust. spare tire holder underneath just needs to be cut out, i dont think i need it, its rusty as hell, non structural, and holds salt.
I can do body work.
I have a welder and I think i do a pretty nice job, I think i can fix all of these issues other than the miles (obviously) but it will take time and some money. I have until April to fix it up for DD duties. I have no real exp driving standard, but i wanted a 5 speed anyways.
The truck will cost 700 dollars, rad support is 150 shipped, the rust other than that i might not even need metal to fix, no holes, will need crossmembers either bought or built, also doable.
The paint is fine other than the bed which has a ton of primer on it from the bed cap scratches. engine sounds fine and runs extremely smooth, trans shifts okay, by the time i learn to drive it it may need a clutch, 160 bucks to buy. The truck is over all pretty solid, it will be a lot of hours fixing but i think i could put 3-400 bucks into all the body work and come out on top, suspension and stuff are all in great shape.
So, do you guys thing this is a worth while buy? i planned originally on a 1500$ vehicle budget to replace the explorer. I told him I'd text him by 11 pm tonight with a decision, and im not really sure but i havent seen any better deals nearby, especially not from anyone i knew (work friend) so really, if you guys have any input or opinions i would really, really love to hear them.
