How do u replace the O/D button on the shifter arm

Check your in-cab fuses. I had this issue with an Explorer I purchased years ago. O/D button didn't work. There were also a couple of other things that also didn't work. The AUTO-lock function also didn't work. It turned out that the PO had removed/borrowed a fuse and never replaced it. I found this out by accident. Replaced the fuse and everything worked again, Owner's manual did not mention the circuits on this fuse.

If the button is bad you have to remove the button by carefully prying it off the shift arm. There are 2 wires that plug into the button (both black). The wires are very thin and run through the hollow shaft shaft arm. with the key ON if you briefly touch the wires together the O/D light should go ON/OFF. If it doesn't your problem might be a broken wire. These vehicles, with often used tilt-wheel, suffer wiring pulls/breaks.

99% of the time you will find where the wires are broken and can fix without removing the button
If you dig into your steering column and find where the shifter arm attaches with a pin, the two small wires come out of the shifter arm and travel around the column to down below where they connect. Look closely at the wiring you will see where it wore through.....

That is after you check your fuses.
