Hi...I have a 2000 Ford Explorer 4wd... the O/D light started flashing and the transmission started slipping in 2nd gear only last week. We did a filter change it seemed to correct the problem from last Wednesday till this Monday.. then it all started again. If I manually shift it it works fine and sometimes it will work for a little bit after I manually shift it once of twice then go back to slipping again. Also it doesn't do it constantly... I may go out right now and it won't do it at all, or yet I could leave and it will do it as soon as I pull out, and not do it on the way back, it doesn't seem to matter if it is hot or cold, it just seems to have a mind of its own.. does anybody out there have any suggestions? Or has anyone had this problem if so what was it and about how much am I looking at to get it fixed. I guess I should ask about how long it should take to fix it too.
Thanks for your time. Shannon

You're looking at a rebuild. Start calling around and getting estimates.

If you have an overdrive light flashing, it means that there is a code stored. Have it scanned. It will tell you which part, or parts might have failed. The 5R55E 5 speed auto uses Mercon V ATF.

tranny shop come up with L333PO3 and possible third gear comeing out

Honestly, the code doesn't mean much. Even if the tranny shop is able to do a fix without rebuilding the tranny, it will just be a bandaid.

update i have driven the exploer all weekend and it hasnt sliped' its and on and off thing when it does start to act up' i just cant belive i might need a rebulid .tranny shop really has me on edge over this so called third gear comeing out.

The 5R55E has some common issues with the valve body gaskets, solenoids, and occasionally loose valve body bolts. If the problem is intermittent, it most likely is a valve body issue. The rest of the internal parts in the 5R55E are pretty strong (compared to the older A4LD). I would not just say to rebuild everything so fast. Have you read Glacier991's valve body rebuild diary, and Big_Billy's stairway to a diary? As a general rule, transmission shops usually say that you need an entire rebuild. There are alot of people here that have done valve body rebuilds, and have not had to rebuild the entire transmission. Try to get an accurate scan (Pxxxx) of the code, and post it here.
