I was driving home from NYC to the Poconos the other day and the O/D Off light was flashing. Didn't drive it until I could get it looked at until today and I got the codes.

I got two, they are:

P1516 - Speed Control Command Switch High

P0741 - Torque Converter Clutch System Stuck Off

The first guy recommended a transmission rebuild, totalling $2000!

The second guy said it could be a wire controlling something could have a small break and its shorting out, or that my transmission fluid is very dirty (I haven't had it changed since I got the truck at 32,000 miles and I'm at 131,000 now). I'm going with the second guy, he said start small then work your way up. I'm going to get a tranny flush and see if that works and maybe we'll be able to see if there is anything wrong from there.

If any of you can give me an idea of what you think the codes mean, by all means let me know! I need all possible explanations possible.

Thank you

::edit:: My Explorer is a 4.0L V6 and it has 4WD

mine went off and i needed a rebuild but you can change the fluid on your own it's not hard just unbolt the tranny pan that way you canalso check for metal shavings in the bottom if the fluid isn't white and theres no metal shavings it proalbe was just dirty fluid

You might have to rebuild the valve body if the fluid change doesn't help. Don't do a flush with a machine. They don't remove the pan to change the filter in these shops when they use a flush machine.

The shop im going to isn't a Jiffy Lube or an Aamco, it's locally owned and ran so I don't think that they will use a machine to do it, I'll make sure when I go on Monday.

i did that before and the guy cracked my center shaft.so i then took my truck to an atlas shop cost me 2900 on top of the 700 i payed the first guy

umm...in case I wasn't clear...I'm doing a tranny fluid flush first...that shouldn't cost $700.

It sounds like the valve body in the transmission is stuck

Update!

I did the transmission flush today. The guy dropped the pan and replaced the fluid and the filter. He said that there were shavings on the magnet, which is probably true for a transmission that has 131,000 miles on it and never had its fluid changed. Hopefully this will work. I did notice that after I had hit a moderate pot hole a couple days ago before getting the flush, the O/D OFF light started flashing again (maybe that would explain a short wire?) and that the voltmeter on the instrument cluster was high (it should be a little after the second line - it was almost at the third! - maybe thats related to it?). I'm gonna pick it up tomorrow and see how it runs. Hopefully all is well. Anyone with anymore information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Another Update!

Okay...the flush worked really well. The tranny is A LOT smoother but the damn OD OFF light keeps flashing. I'm beginning to think its the speed control module? Any thoughts? Where is the speed control module located? How much does it cost to replace it?

Disconnect the battery for 5-10 minutes to reset the computer. Drive it.
