"O/D OFF" Light Keeps Coming On

About two days ago, I was getting on the highway and out of no where, the "O/D OFF" light on my dash started blinking. I'm assuming O/D means overdrive so I tried pressing the O/D button but nothing changed. When I turn the car off and back on, the light turns off.
This has happened about three times this week. I have a 96' explorer. I noticed that the light tends to come on when I'm accelerating fast and around 3K RPMS. Also, don't know if this might be related, two days ago, my explorer wouldn't start. I thought it was the battery, but it was charged. Out of random, my car started up again and that hasn't happened since.
Anyone know what this light might be?

The light is flashing because a transmission fault has been detected. The computer will have stored a code indicating what the problem is. It's best to avoid driving the truck until it's fixed as the trans will go into limp mode and maximize all controllable internal pressures. 6 or 8 cylinder?

Whatever happened with your O/D light flashing.
I read several posts where the shift solenoids can cause this and can be fixed for a lot less $$ than a new or rebuilt transmission.

Well I've been having problems with the truck and the shift solenoid has been the reason my check engine light wont go off. Its been to four different mechanics and none of them have yet to fix my truck to where it will stay off. I use my truck everyday so it gets a lot of wear. I think its a V6 but I have no idea. How would I find out?
