Plain and simple, the transmission in my 04 explorer feels like no other car ive ever driven. It just feels weak, and it seems confused as when to shift (both the original tranny and the new one i just had put in at 88k feel like this). So my question is, when not driving on the highway would it be ok to drive with the overdrive off at all times? Unless say im going 55+ mph steadily. Would there be any benefit to doing this? It seems to shift better when the overdrive is off.

ps i have the 5r55s tranny with a 4.0 behind it. 4x4.

Everyone has their own opinion about this but here is mine. when my wife got her 03 used in 07, knowing the history of explorer transmissions, i 'trained' my wife to always turn off O/D unless she was traveling on the highway. the way i look at it, less shifting into and out of OD means less heat and less wear. maybe i loss a marginal amount of fuel economy, but i figured it may help extend the life of the tranny. 90k miles currently.
