I recently had my O2 sensor, Bank2 sensor1, changed out. About 1 day later
a small rattling noise turned bigger over tne next 3 days. I took the
Explorer back to the mechanic and he said I needed a new catalytic converter. I went to a muffler shop and had a OME Cat installed for $700.
My question is, could changing the O2 sensor give me a problem with the
converter, as if it is possible, I am considering a small claims action???
The O2 sensor install cost $400 plus the $47 diagnostic and the $700 cat
install. The mechanic said that after the service engine soon light came on
that I should have brought it to the shop immediately but it was on the weekend that it happened and I was 30 miles from home. Honestly, is he
right or is he trying to deflect blame from his o2 senson install??
Thank You, Gerald
PS: if the mechanic is correct, let my $1147.00 lesson keep you on the
ball when you see the service engine soon light!!

It's remotely possible that a bad O2 sensor could cause your engine to spew bad exhaust into the catalytic converter, causing it to fail. Although, they usually only fail when you dump excessive oil into them, or something like that. There should be no way the O2 replacement caused the cat to fail.

All cats have federally mandated minimum 5yr/50k warranty (possibly more from factory). May be you qualify?

Possibly, since O2 sensor and cat are near each other, something happened down there, and killed both items at the same time. You only noticed the O2 sensor first...

Something came loose inside the cat converter on my wife's S-10 and it make a hell of a rattling noise. It didn't cost anywhere near $700 to replace it though. I think you probably got ripped off on the price. $400 for an O2 sensor seems outrageous too.

Next time you need diagnostic done. go to Autozone. They will hook the code reader up for free.

Ford normally gives 7 years/75,000 miles which ever comes first with some emission component and I think catalytic converter is one of it.

Highly doubtful the O2 sensor had anything to do with the cat. You were raped on the fee for the sensor.
