For those that may not know, I have a chip in my truck burnt for 93 octane. My mom took my truck to go get groceries yesterday while I was away. Being the wonderful mother that she is she got my truck washed and filled up the tank. Well, she filled it with 87 octane. The tank was at less than 1/4 tank, so 3/4 of that tank was 87 octane. Is this going to cause my engine to run like crap and ping? Should I take the chip out until I fill up again with 93?

I'm considering just taking out the chip to see if I feel a performance difference. 93 octane is just getting too damn expensive.

According to Doug (Bama) in a recent post, you shouldn't use Octane which is lower rated than your program. Not sure what happens.

I sure notice the difference between no chip and a chip installed, whether 87 or 91. I can tell the difference between 87 and 91 programs as well. Subtle, but it's there.

sounds like I will just take the chip out and run the tank until its low and I can fill up again.

Put in some octane boost...

better yet, go to Home Depot and grab a gallon of Xylene, dump it in and you are set. I have used it many times in my GTP with great results.

Or I could just take out the chip, which is what I will be doing...

Like before mentioned if the chip is doing anything then you should be gettting some detonation or pinging. Great way to tell if it's worth a crap because on early models like yours if you add enough timing to make a chip good then you MUST run premium fuel.

You can remove it and be safe but before you do drive it and listen for any detonation, if you do hear even the slightest then remove it until you get some 93.

Later Doug.

Ya, I heard a little detonation while I drove it this morning. When I got back home I took it out. My only dilemma now is whether I want to keep it or not. I am considering selling it since paying for 93 is just getting to expensive and I am a poor college student. Besides, the difference just is not worth the extra $.20 a gallon when you don't have the meens to pay for it.
