well, about 2 weeks ago my x started making this odd noise. clanking like a rattling cat sheild or something. i got under there and there were no loose sheilds, no loose anything for that matter. then the sound went away. well, it came back this week. here's a description: it only makes the sound IN gear under load. not revving, not decelerating with it in gear, and not rolling out of gear. so it has to be something with the drivetrain, and the u joints are good (no shaft play at either end). its erratic and sounds like someone is tapping the bell housing with the round end of a ball-pein hammer. like i said, its odd. any help is appreciated!!!!!

ok, its leaking a small amount of tranny fluid, barely a spot on the driveway once a week or less. also, coolant seems to vaporize, since it doesn't leak anywhere and its low everytime i check it. i don' t know. i need help. any ideas before my bank account gets pilaged by the $tealership?

I think I have the same problem. Mostly at highway speeds at a stedy criuse. Sounds like rocks in a tin can or something. Let me know if you find something.

Check the transsmision mounts

I just had my 91 tranny rebuilt couple weeks ago, and the tech found a small portion of some shaft component had crystallized and broken away from itself - causing a similar noise in my tranny prior to failure. I noticed the sound about two moths before it went. I do not know if that was a contributing factor to the failure, but the hard part had to be replaced during the rebuild. I can't recall exactly what the part name was, but it was on the shaft somewhere in the bellhousing and rattled around. I will try to find the service bill and pin down what it was called.

I could only really hear it in drive or reverse, with the foot on the brakes. It would go away when you put gas to it. (Heard best when sitting waiting for coffee in a drive-thru!). I had made it to 280,000 kms, so I did give it a hug when it came out of the truck!

I'll see what I can find out about the part affected -

I just looked at the bill, and it was either a spacer or a bushing - it did not specify, but I sighted the part when they took it out, and the piece itself was about the size of a thumbnail......

Sorry I cannot identify it further for you, but it sounds nearly identical to the sounds I was hearing. I don't really think it was the cause of my tranny;s demise per se, only a sign that it was starting to need attention.....
