Hey peoples,
Just bought another Explorer last week. Been missing my old '98 since I sold it over a year ago and was happy to get back into one. It's a '96 Explorer XLT with a 5.0L. Body is in decent shape for the year (REALLY good, considering this is Illinois rust country).

The odometer says 196,217 but I noticed after I got it home that it's not working at all. The speedometer works just fine and is accurate, but neither the odometer or trip odometer work. Is this a simple fix or am I going to have to cannibalize another dash from a junkyard truck? Never had the cluster apart on one of these, so any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

Inside the cluster there is a motor and a worm gear that runs the odometer/trip. The worm gear usually goes bad by breaking into pieces. Yes this is a pretty simple fix if your comfortable taking the cluster apart. And yes you can take the part from a cluster at the junkyard. Tthas what i did on my "95.

Just had the same problem with a 98 XLT. Went to the local boneyard and got a complete instrument panel for around $25. Many choices but found one with close to my original mileage. Easy enough to swap out without having to dig into the worm gear.

You can use an IP from Explorer, Ranger or Mountaineer. The boneyard can print you a list of what's compatible to your model.
