I own a nice explorer and my OD isn't counting miles like it used to. I heard from some folks that I should just take and remove the instrument panel. I am told that there is a plastic gear that needs replacing.

Has any one done this procedure?

whoops thats no good

If your speedometer is still working, then it means that the little motor that drives the odometer died, or one of the small gears broke - the speedometer and odometer in the 2nd gens are electronically driven. Just pull the instrument cluster - form there you can remove the speedometer section and replace the motor or gear. Grab a replacement speedo unit from the junk yard and harvest the motor. It's the cheapest way to go.
