odometer??

My sister has my 94' so I barely drive it at all, and I know it just hit over 100,000 miles a few weeks ago. But I notice something weird. On the odometer, instead of keeping track over 100,000 miles, it turned to 100,000 fine, but after that the numbers all went to 0 and it started over, so now it says my truck has like 1500 miles on it now?

Is that normal, cause a bunch of people I know with Explorers that have over 100,000 all said their odometers all did the same thing, once they hit 100,000 miles it went back to all zeros and started tracking again. Is that normal?? Like my friends 93' says it has 4000 miles on it instead of saying 104,000.

I only know of two other Explorers over 100,000 miles that give the exact number, mine and everyone esle I know that has one over 100,000 miles resets back to all zeros and starts again from there.

I just can't figure out if it's normal or not, scince I've seen a lot more w/ over 100,000 do the same setting back to zeros thing.

Mine should be around 101,500 miles, but it says 1500 miles???

Yeah, it's normal. The first gens had gauges and an dashboard design that were lifted from the late 80s Ranger/Bronco II. Which meant that they were probably designed in the early to mid 80s. Back then, I don't think anyone ever thought cars would last over 100K (or that anyone would keep them that long), so most of the odometers from that era were five digits instead of six. My 92 shows 53,000 on the odo, but it really has 153,000 miles on it.

It was more common for the foreign car companies that had the odometers that went above 100k and I think people naturally assumed they expected it to last more than 100k if it would go higher than that. The domestic car companies had to compete by adding another digit to the odometer. In the "Old" days (70's) we used to think it was amazing if a cars odometer "rolled over" and was still running.

....And in Canada, ALL first gen. and up Explorers have six digits odometers, as they are in Kilometers, so it is easier to get them over 100,000, which is only 60,000 miles

Thats what I was thinking b/c I know some people with Explorers w/ over 100,000 did the same thing, but then then theres some like Positive Vibes post that didn't do that. Like, I know two kids at college who both have 93's, one truck says 4000 miles but the other one says 145, something, huh, weird?

So, the Canadian 94's have 6-digit odometers and the U.S. 94's have 5-digit odometers... Anyone know of a way to adapt a Canadian console to a US truck and keep the miles versus Kilometers? My odometer's about to roll over again, and I'm proud of my miles.

Well my 94 say 104352 on it. Who knows, might depend on when in the year it was manufactured.

see thats what I don't get, my 94' says 1500 instead of 101,500 but yours says 104,352, did Ford have different odometers on the 94's?

I live as far away from Canada as you can get in the US, so I don't have a Canadian truck.

My Explorer was once of the first produced. (A replacement for a '93 that was a lemon.) So my 5-digit was from early 1994. When was yours from JGAMBLE and SaleenEXP?

Don't really know either, got her 4 years ago for my 16th b-day, it's my sisters now, but I just don't understand why some 94's would come with 6 digit odometers and some with 5 digits. And my friends that have Explorers that did this also don't live anywhere close to Canada.

Our 1992 shows 273xxx miles.. of course I used a labeler to make the first 2... without my addition to the dash it only shows 73k miles...

Now our 1995 Neon has the 6 digit odometer....

I like the 6 digit odometers.. When people see it says 273k miles they are suprised.. (neon only has a lowly 198k miles)..

So am I special for having 6 digits on the odometer. Someone else has to have 6 without it being made for kilometers.

Do all American 1st Gen Explorers have the little red "dash" at 55MPH on the speedo? We dont have any red marks here in Canada.....I know the speedo's changed colors between 1992 and 1993, but maybe the red "dash" is only on some years too....
