The exact OE plug should be a single platinum plug, at least on my 05 it is. Autolite part # AP 103 is what is in mine. They cost about $3.20 each. I checked the OE Motorcraft plugs for the 4.0L V-6 at Advance Auto and they have the Single Platinum plug listed as well. Parts stores sell double and quad platinum plugs that will work in your Explorer, but a mechanic told me they weren't the "right" or "correct" plug for my vehicle and he didn't recommend using them.
My 2002 V6 came with single platinum, but the plugs were different between the two banks. One bank (3 total) had the platinum on the ground, the other side (3 total) had the platinum on the electrode.
The reason is that the these explorers use a waste spark ignition system with each plug sparking twice in a cycle, rather than once - this allows Ford to use only 3 coils rather than 6 for this electronic ignition system.
One bank fire ground to electrode and the other bank fires electrode to ground and the wear pattern is different between them. If you replace the plugs with all the same single platinum one side will be fine but the other side will wear much faster.
The best thing to do is to when the time comes to replace the plugs is to only use double platinum plugs. This is what I did.
