Legal spots in and around the GWNF near Harrisonburg. Im in MD outside DC and thats the spot we go to for legal trail riding. Quite a few trails near Harrisonburg, and a few mile North and South. Most for stock to mild modified. There is a George Washington Forest 4WD group on yahoo, I cant get a link to post, but go to yahoo groups and search you should pull it up.

I dont go much further south than Harrisonburg which is 2 plus hrs for me, but think there are some other trails to the south on St rt 60 (snow creek or ?) that may still be open. May check the forest service web site.

You're not too far from Tellico in NC. Maybe 4hrs from Lynchburg??

Check the trails section of this site for more.

GWNF and TJNF are some great places in the mountains definitely (and legal). There are lots of trails straight out Rt. 33 west of Harrisonburg that are all pretty fun. There is one a few miles past the last road before the National Forest that has a flood control lake with a 30-40 foot tower in the lake that we JMUers always go jump off of. Also, my uncle owns a bunch of land around the Richmond area that he lets us root up on. If you are ever around Richmond, let me know, we could go sometime.

Around Richmond (central Va), I don't know of anywhere that is 100% legal unless it is on private property. I have gone out with some friends in the construction zones of Pocahontas Parkway (the new highway around Richmond) and that has been a lot of fun. Other than that, we have had some light fun on railroad trails and Va. Power clearings, but that is about it.

Best bet, head west to the NFs mentioned above (2-3 hours) or head to Outer Banks to get sandy (3 hours).

Let me know if you find anything great,

Robb

Hey Robb, my buys and develops land all around Richmond, mostly southside though. So he lets us tear it all up before the crews move in to start construction. Most of his land was way down in River's Bend south of Chippenham. He is looking at buying some land out around the west end now, most likely Goochland across the river from VPBA.
