If your VIN starts with an E, its the SOHC, if it starts with an X, its the OHV.

o ok thanks the sohc is the better engine right

"Better" is relative from person to person.
Its more powerful but it is more complex (design wise and more parts) than the OHV and therefore requires attention (such as the timing chain tensioners).

Yes sorry not start .. keep going, you'll either find an X or an E in one of the latter positions.

o alright so its ethier gone have one or the other right its not gonna have both e and a x in the vin

Yeah thats right.

look under the hood and you will know instantly. the ohv has a piece of plastic on top of the motor that sais OHV Or just 4.0L..The SOHC will have one saying 4.0L SOHC

That plastic thing breaks off sometimes so its not a 100% sure way of telling.

welcome

Chances are, it's SOHC. The Sport was harder to harder to find WITHOUT SOHC in 2000 (not that I even wanted the OHV). The timing chain thing is definitely a hassle (mine was fixed under warranty in my 2000 Sport). Make no mistake about it.....the SOHC is a better engine. More HP and Torque and more fun to drive. While OHV is a reliable engine, I found it sluggish. I also got much better mileage with a SOHC. I've owned both. Assuming you're not dealing with the timing chain issue (it's pretty loud.....an incessant rattle), you'll be much happier with SOHC. If you are dealing with that issue, it's a costly repair and not simple if you're doing it yourself. My '97 Sport never had the issue. My '00 Sport did. Outside of that, I never had ANY issues with the SOHC.

Definitely try the "plastic cover"" method as it gives the 4.0L SOHC hint right away. If you're still unsure, post a pic of the engine. It's easy to tell.

If the 8th digit of the vin is "X", then it came from the factory with an OHV.

As far as the sticker, are you talking about the sticker that shows the belt routing?

2000 sohc v6

If your engine looks like mine used to as shown below then you have a SOHC V6.

Look for the camshaft position sensor just aft of the oil filler tube/cap on the driver side.
