Umm for reliability go with the OHV. to get the SOHC in a 1st gen, you'll need a new computer, wiring, harness, etc. Another option is to go with a v8 swap with new drivetrain.

the 5.0L is in my mind, im going to the local yard for a new motor sometime this week and gunna get whatever i feel like at the last moment, so far im shooting for a 4.0 tho because everything is there for it.

i just wasnt sure what motor was preferd, the OHV or SOHC

I would say the SOHC, however, the swap will be much more difficult than an OHV replacement.

what would be a list of parts id need for a SOHC swap? the SOHC has more power but whats the downside of the SOHC? is it going to be good offroad or is the power range in the higher RPM's then a OHV?

Beside the engine, engine computer, harness, the A/C box will have to be modified, the fire wall will need to be modified, the list goes on . I am doing this right now, and would have to say that replacing your engine with the same type would much easier. Otherwise go with the 5.0. The 4.0 sohc can be done, but you would almost have to have the donor vehicle so you could get what you need for the installation.

If you are gearing, then you wont really see any difference between the OHV or the SOHC on the trails due to the LO range and deeper gears. Heck I'm not sure many will notice much difference between the 4.0Ls and the 2.xL versions of this Cologne block while on the trail.

thanks for the info guys, looks like ill be using the OHV, just got word my buddie is doing a 5.0 in his explorer so im getting his 4.0 fully dressed all the way to the tranny, new clutch and starter. plus i get his computer because im swaping the 5 speed in her. got that for a hell of a deal so i couldnt pass it up

sounds good to me  (Welcome to EF by the way ^_^)
