Hey guys what would ya'll suggest as far as oil and oil filter on a '91 Mazda Navajo with 158k miles. It runs good with a small 'roughness' at idle but not bad but doesn't have a good time starting. Those things may not have much effect on the type oil but just wanted to let ya know the condition of the car, its predominately city driven now with a 100mi+ trip every 2 or so weeks.

I am a majoy suppoeter of the synthetic oil camp. I have been using Mobil 1 0w30 with Mobil 1 filters; however, I am anbout to give Amsoil 0w30 a go ( with their filter ). AgExplorer is offering the Amsoil at great prices.

Good luck.....

It's often not good to switch a high mileage motor to synthetic. I also don't use Pennsoil; it resulted in low mileage and poor performance when I used it. Other than that though, I use whatever the gas station decides to put in ;)

I am a firm believer that if you have an older vehicle with a lot of miles and are not 100% sure on how the miles got on it then use regular ol' 10W30 and if you seem to seep or burn oil use 20W50 (that came from a drag mechanic) and it worked on an older 86 cougar with the 3.0. I think the synthetic stuff is good with almost to new vehicles. Just my 2 cents

Miles

90% of the miles are highway miles from Alabama to New York and back, but now its getting 90% city miles for the past 5k I've owned it.

Stick with the regular stuff, it got you this far so there must be some good magic in there after all.

Sky1785,

Is there a chance you could do a search for this subject? Sometimes this subject gets a little "touchy" with a lot of people, because everyone has their own opinion on type of oil. There are a bunch of threads on this. "What is the best oil?" is kinda like asking a 100 guys "Which is better, Ford, Chevy, or Foreign?" It is a "debate" which has no clear answer. It all depends on experience.

I recommend the Motorcraft FL-1A Filter. It's good and it's cheap.

I use motorcraft filters and Napa Oil.

1) change it every 3000 ( so why not every 5000 or 10000? Simple... its easy, cheap, and its the best insurance going Don't be penny wise and pound foolish)
2) warm up your truck get that oil circulating!! Lots of people start their motors and rev it up and take off right away... meanwhile the oil hasnt circulated and all sorts of wear is taking place. Want proof on a human scale Get up at 4am and run like hell out of bed go full throttle see how far you get before hitting a wall hehe
3)DO NOT RUN LOW ON OIL!! low oil causes it to heat up and cook turning into sludge
4)Change filter every oil change
5) go find the consumer reports issue on oil and thier test on NYC taxi cabs and you will find out that all oil is about the same no name gas station brand or major label It doesnt matter Ive used Napa Exxon Texaco Mobil Shell Castrol Valvoline Chevron in many different cars and as long as i have followed the above 4 rules NEVER A PROBLEM!! Gonna keep your truck for a Looooonnngggg time? AND its in excellent wear shape go with the synthetic and change it yourself save some money Which one? who cares?/!! they are all within micro whatevers with each other. But its not really worth the cost if you are only gonna keep it for 100,000 miles If you want it to last 200,000 or your life whichever comes first then use synthetics

Most of all enjoy your truck!! :redexp: :yelexp: :p

According to one of the Mechanical Engineering professors here at Mississippi State University who use to work for General Motors said don't use Quaker State due to sludging. From my experience with Quaker State in the past, I believe it.

I disagree,
First, if you started with synthetic you would never consider a engine as being "High Miles" as you would have no carbon buildup, excessive wear, valves sticking, etc. But if you do a flush now and run a quality synthetic you lower temperatures and drag, increase oil pressure (I did when using Amsoil 10W-40), start to remove sludge. I have ran synthetic in all the Corvairs I owned, some of them totally shot and never worried about lifters, pushrods, and bearing surfaces after that. With a synthetic that has a good volitility rating you will actually use less oil!
Presently I drive a Mazda and have 26,000 miles on my 0W30. I do use analysis but it is not needed if you follow the label...

consumer reports

Also be known Consumer Reports is politically motavated! It's a sorry publication..

It's a savage nation!

Hey mellotron, do you still have any Corvairs?

I put my Honda civic with 155,000 on it to Valvoline Max Life for higher mileage engines. It instantly ran smoother and quieter than before, could just be the fresh oil but either way it runs great now.

Vair King!
Cool.. My other email is Vairtex.. I just sold my 64 spyder.. And van to Pete K. in Detriot. Do you go to the corvair conventions? I may still be able to go to Flagstaff Corvair Convention.. If your a communique subscriber my ad is the Synthetic Warehouse one...
