is there an easy way to remove the oil filter. other than having a quick change oil place do it. i have tried the filter wrenches but the oil filter is so high up you cant get a turn on it once you have tightened it around the filter.

I have an Oil Filter Socket that goes onto a rachet, and would try using a Swivel and an extension to get at it.

Go to Sears...... and get the Crasftman Oil Filter wrench.... It is a weird looking device. When you use it, it actually starts to crush the oil filter, and the more prssure you put on it to turn it the more pressure it applies to the side of the oil filter. its the best oil filter wrench I have used!

I know what you're talking about when you say the filter wrench won't work, it takes too many degrees of movement to tighten it up on the filter, and by the time it is tight its up against something so you can't actually move the filter... Is that what you mean? If it is, I just jam a screwdriver or 2 parallel to the filter inside the wrench, so it doesn't need so much travel to tighten up. Works most of the time.

My usual order for filter removal tools is:
1. Hand
2. Hand+sandpaper
3. Filter wrench
4. Big friggin' vice grips (I mean the HUGE c shaped ones)
5. The great equalizer... Jam a screwdriver through both sides of the filter, turn. Never fails.

Good luck!

same here. though if it doesnt work, #4 and #5 on nosaj122081's list are guaranteed to work ;)

here's a thing from the hayne's manual:
Sometimes the oil filter is screwed on so tightly that it can't be loosened. If it is, punch a metal bar or long screwdriver directly through it, as close to the engine as possible, and use it as a T-bar to turn the filter. Be prepared for oil to spurt out of the canister as it's punctured.

You could always try that, hehe.

yah, i mentioned a few ideas before, and the screwdriver through the filter will work, but plan on spending a lot of time cleaning up, heh :p when i first got my truck (when it was brand new and the filter was put on in the factory) i couldnt get it off for the life of me. 2 friends of mine work for a heavy equipment repair shop and they gave me everything they had for filter removal (i.e.: all kinds of wrenches, straps, etc.) finally, i ended up using a pair of "oil filter pliers" that were just big pliers that had some pretty hefty teeth on them. the teeth bit in to the filter, and i squeezed the hell out of it and squashed the filter into a square and eventually, pryed it off.

If you have to do the screwdriver trick, what I do to avoid an oily mess all over the place is punch a hole in the bottom of the filter (since it sits vertically) and drain it out. That way, when you jab the screwdriver through the side it won't run every which way, instead you can drain it into a pan. Good luck!

I use the filter wrench and an extension socket. It works great!!!

I have had the same prob with all of my vehicles at some time. But the Ex was the worst. UNTIL I bought the 'oil filter pliers' Tbomb mentioned. I threw most of my round ones away after that. That is one of my most valuable tools I have, and I HIGHLY recommend them.

I like the filter socket, a 3/8" ratchet and a 9" extension best.

I just do it the man way and take it off and tighten it with my bare hands. Really that's what I had to do because the damn screw driver through the side would make a huge mess and I don't have a filter socket or wrench.

I had an oil filter on an F150 that gave me hell one time. I used the srewdriver trick but that just tore a huge gash in the filter. I finally squashed it with some pliers and after a couple of hours and numerous cuts, I got it off. I then noticed that it didn't have a o-ring on the filter or the housing! It was so tight it didnt leak while the filter was on there!
