Ok, so I just got a 00 Explorer LTD with 5.0 V8 with 93K on the ticker. I am looking to find out what oil I SHOULD be using, and who makes a good one. I read one person said Ansoil. So I am going with the best I can afford, 5-6/qt is my price point.

Thanks!

Ok seriously we all like our cars and no one has a opinion on what they feed there car oil wise??? Ok lets try this synthetic or conventional?

its not the oil its the driving / interval.

I just use the Motorcraft synthetic blend 5W-20. I've used Valvoline MaxLife in the past, but use the Motorcraft now, as it gains really good reviews on bobistheoilguy.com, for me only Motorcraft filters and Motorcraft 5W-20.

Oil is hard- you'll get 50 different answers all insisting that their choice is the best.

Here is a great read, kind of long and somewhat in need of concentration, but it illustrates why I don't spend $$ for Mobil 1, etc. The oil is really good, even before you talk about the exceptional price point.

Of course, there is no one perfect oil- Waskly is right- many formulations can be tailored to the type of driving you do. It depends on your plans.

I prefer synthetic over conventional. Mobil One, Royal Purple and Amsoil are top picks. Price wise Mobil one might be the cheapest

As long as you use the correct viscosity and stick with major brands, it would be hard to pick a 'wrong' oil. Just be sure to change it at the recommended interval for the type you're using.

The Motorcraft synthetic blend and a Motorcraft filter is excellent and cost efficient.

Castrol GTX or Mobil is great for basic non-synthetic oil that'll go 5000 miles.

You can also just get what's on sale and change brands every month.

Stuff like Amsoil is when you've got the time on your hands to be a snob about oil and brag about how much you spend to people on the internet. I'd stick with stuff you can buy on sale at a retail store.

Well this helps. I was never sure if ford was good oil or just crap they put in the engine to charge a lot of $$ for.

Also I have always heard great things about NAPA so knowing about the re brand is good to know.

Then the final question, do you do it yourself or just take it to ford when you use the motorcraft?

Thanks for the oil guy link it was a lot of info!
