what oil to use?

Best filters (per SAE HS806 test by independent lab): AMSOIL, Mobil 1, Pure 1 for filtration efficiency. AMSOIL, Mobil 1, Hard Driver for filter capacity.

I use AMSOIL motor oil and filters. Change the oil about once a year and change the filter at 6 months. I use oil analysis to really determine when to perform the maintenance. My Explorer runs better, idles smoother, and gas mileage has improved about 10%. The oil analysis assisted in diagnosing a thermostat problem that otherwise may have lead to some serious problems.

That would have been me in the "pingig" thread that told you to stay away from the Fram filter. I myself have always used Fram, oil, air and fuel filters.
After doing research and finding different info on the web, I found that Fram was cheap and low quality.
Before I started looking in auto parts stores at different brands, I assumed Fram was the best.(made an ass out of me)

In the other thread people were looking for pinging cures, some people said that when they changed there oil and filter, the pinging stopped for a thousand miles or so.
I had read that it is sometimes caused by resticted oil flow,
since the low quality Fram filter can restricrt flow, It made sense that as the filter aged, the flow was being reduced, hence the pinging stopped after a change. I suggested staying away Fram because it does not have high flow and is poorly constructed. 2,000 miles since I changed to K&N, and no pinging.

Adreenaleen,
Thanks for the information on oil filters! That was very enlightening. It looks like the best filter for the money is Motorcraft. It is a top quality filter at a Fram price.

AgExplorer,
Is the text of the SAE test available? This would be interesting reading.

After reading the minimopar site, I took one of my Frams (4.6 Mustang) and cut it apart in the lathe. What he said about cheap construction was right on the money. Cardboard endcaps too.

Ron,

I'll have to check on the availability of the text. I have technical data sheets for AMSOIL's oil and air filters. I can mail you copies of these. If you are interested, please e-mail your mailing address. AMSOIL states in writing that their filters are good for 6 months or 12,500 miles (whichever comes first) when used with their motor oil.
