Oil filters for 99 SOHC 4.0 engine?

Just got a 99 sport with 4.0 sohc 11,000 miles on it.
Reading through the manual Ford says ONLY use Motorcraft
oil filters otherwise 'knocking and engine noise when starting' will occur. My previous explorer sport (95 with 4.0 ) was always changed at Valvoline every 2500-3000 miles and it had 110,000 miles on it when I sold it! Still purred like a kitten! Does the SOHC have some different design that lets oil drop down when it sits overnight? What about running Dura Lube through it? I did that with my previous truck. Suggestions? thanks.

I have a '99 sport Sohc also. I change my oil every 3000 religiously. I have tried a few different brands with my truck, and the only one I had a problem with was fram. It was probably just a one time thing, but the filter woudlnt make a tight seal, and blew oil all over my engine bay when I started the truck up. NOt a fun thing to fix. Especially when the oil gets on your headers and smokes like son of a *****. I have used mobile 1 filters without a problem. Now I use Ford motorsports. Someone on here did a test, and rated that one pretty high. I use either mobile 1 or castrol syntec oil, and Ford motorsport filters. I have 23k and havent had any problem but that fluke with the fram. ha ;-)

Stay away from the DuraLube and any other oil additive. Every engine oil on the market today has everything in it you need to protect your Explorer.

As far as filters, Mobil 1 makes the best over the counter filter on the market today. All have a drain back valve that will prevent the oil from draining back down into the pan. But not all filters are made alike. Fram has not been a favorite of the guys on the board. Inferior construction and materials.

If you want the best, check out AMSOIL.

Thanks for the info guys... I will not bother with DuraLube this time around and will try the Ford/Motorcraft filters and we'll see what happens.
