1999 Explorer XLS
Hi, I have a 1999 explorer xls 4x4 with the 5 speed standard. While checking the fluids I noticed that the engine was very low on oil. Once I checked the coolent I noticed a brown, rust colored coolent with a very nasty smell. There is also a layer of rainbow scale on top of the coolent. From what I can tell, no coolent got into the crank case, only oil in the coolent. Any ideas what could have caused this? Thank you.

Blown head gasket, cracked head? What engine? If it's a 4.0L OHV cracked heads are pretty common.

By water gasket, do you mean a gasket around the water pump?

I have no idea what he means. Timing cover gasket maybe? Seems unlikely.
