I'm driving a 96' xlt with 170k miles and I was wondering what would be the best oil to put into it when I change it.

Any suggestions?

Amsoil

Use amsoil if you can get it and if you feel comfortable for long OCI's (10,000 miles or more)

Otherwise if you want a synthetic, use Pennzoil Platinum.

If you want regular oil, use Valvoline Maxlife.

If you dont mind me asking... whats synthetic (I know its the oil but I dont know whats the difference between that and regular) and whats the OCI?

Buy whatever is cheapest from the reputable brands. Put it in. Don't use a Fram filter. Enjoy!

Synthetic is exactly as it sounds....it's not REAL oil, drilled from the earth. It is an oil created in a lab. Synthetic oils have more detergants in them, and last longer than their conventional oil counterparts. While oil companies want you to change your oil every 3,000 miles. It has been proven time and time again that even conventional oil in a healthy motor can go 5,000 and even 7,500 miles per oil change. Synthetic oil can last over 10,000.

OCI = Oil Change Intervals.

I'm happy with my Motorcraft FL-1A and Motorcraft synthetic blend, if they don't have it or if it's on sale, I get the Valvoline Maxlife. Stay away from Fram...

Fram?

Dont use a fram? Oh great. i just bought that. I'll take it back and get a different one

btw: whats wrong with fram?

yea why does everyone hate fram filters?i used them for years till everyone on here told me to use fl-1a,witch i do now!!hahha o and i run amsoil or castrol full synthetic

Yeah what is the matter with fram anyway?

Amsoil here. In a bind ill use mobile 1.

I agree fram filters suck.

I'd have to agree with the Motorcraft FL-1A oil filter and Motorcraft Synthetic Blend 5W-30 if you don't have any other brand preference. Best deal going on oil for the price. Buy it in a 5-quart jug and save even more.

Personally I use Castrol and only Castrol.

The Motorcraft FL-1A filter is a deal since you're getting a Purolator Pure one oil filter element in there for around half the price.

Fram sucks since their quality went downhill, probably because they started having to produce so many filters for walmart they cared more about volume and profit than quality.

I guess thats what happens when you choose quantity over quality :(

Yup, go with the Motorcraft filter and I use Mobil 1. I change every 5,000 miles.

You opened a can of worms on this one. Car guys are faithful to their oils. But with good reason.
Anyhow, on topic. A Motorcraft filter is about as good as it gets. Better filter, stronger materials, best drainback valve in the business. And I like Mobil 1 full Synthetic oil. All these guys are dead on with the extended oil change intervals. Even new engines with variable valve timing done by oil pressure. They're very sensitive to poor oil. The new oil change intervals are at 5000 miles. In a few years they are going to 7500. As for Fram. Cut one open. The interior is made of cardboard. Take a look at this link from a Ford Focus Forum comparing Fram to Wix. http://forums.focaljet.com/team-pit-stop/614803-great-cutaway-fram-vs-other-filter.html

I work at a jiffy lube. I'll try to collect and cut away some of the filters we get in that have ran for 5000+ miles.
The brand our franchise uses is Security. I don't know anything about them. But we get in Fram and Wix filters all the time. So it'll be sweet to see some of those after the mileage.

Also, as a company, Jiffy Lube goes by the manufacturer's severe service OCI (3000 or so). Which is pretty easy to fall under. What does everyone think of that interval?

Ive changed my dads oil in his 97 expedition and in my Explorer using fram filters (or whatever is on sale) for years. Ive got 240k miles and he just passed 365k miles... never had a problem.

Look at the two filters in the link posted above. You can see the Fram Xtra Guard is a piece of junk compared to the Wix/Napa Gold filter. Oil don't matter so much. All the oils are pretty good and will go up to 5K miles if you want them to. I change around 4K myself and am using Bosch or Motorcraft or Wix/Napa.
