Valve cover gaskets sound about right. I had this problem on my 91 explorer 4.0. It's only gonna get worse. So get those gaskets changed.
By the way, it is caused by oil leaking from your valve covers on to the hot exhaust, and then getting blown towards your fan. This is a common problem with ALL older 4.0's
You can get by for awhile with tightening the bolts, starting with the bottom ones first, but the bolts are notorious for loosening up and you will have to change the gaskets eventually.
