I want to buy a 91 4x4 4 door explorer and i kinda want standard so my question is that if i get standerd will it be harder to handle. Will a automatic be easier i guess is what i am saying, will i have problems off roading in a stander. This might sound stupid to other ppl but i jsut dont know.

Thank You:D

Many people love standard for off-road. I personally love standard all the time. Also the auto tranny tends to go to hell around 100k so be weary of that.

I think that you have much better control of your engine and wheels with a standard, which makes it easier to offroad. I was and still am very upset that my explorer was offered with a manual.

I love my manual transmission. Ford has never had a good automatic. The only problem I have is having 3.55 gears. First gear is a minimum of 12 mph's. Oh well. I will have 4.10's and 31's soon enough.

All of my other vehicles have 5 speeds but my Explorer. I never liked automatics but I have to say that the 5 speed automatic is quite smooth. I agree with the other guys that for offroad I'd rather have the 5 speed.

Standard is harder to handle if your new to the sport. I'm running the auto in my 91 and love it, I don't rock crawler(NO ROCKS IN FLORIDA), but i do alot of swamp and trail running. So far, 135,000 on the tranny without any problems.

It pretty much depends on how good you are at driving a 5 speed to begin with. If you're not really good at it, you're probably better off with an automatic. I've been driving a 5 speed since I turned 16 and still prefer an automatic for off roading. I think its too easy to roast a clutch trying to slowly climb over an obstacle, plus you don't have to worry about rolling back when you're in a tight squeeze. There's my .02

KEbert, minimum of 12 mph? Try using low range. You could probably go 12 mph in 5th gear while in low range. I am coming from coughJ**pcough experience though, so I'm not absolutely sure...

i love my 5-speed in my '97, when i first started to go offroading in my explorer, it took a minute to get used to it, but now its like nothing. and yeah in 4lo at like 20 mph in 5th gear, i am running prolly near 3000 rpm's. But it kinda freaks people out when they get in my explorer and see the 5-speed, they are like WTF did u put that in here, lol. i tell 'em "Nope ford thought of me when they made this truck" lol

I have a 91 4dr explorer... I feel the manual transmission is a godsend when climbing the hills or playing in the mud. With automatics, you cant really control how slow you go and you can't really use engine compression when wanting to go downhill slowly.

I like my auto, for 2 reasons. I don't drive a manual very well at all, and the way that I drive off-road requires a good bit of my attention, and ideally both hands on the wheel.

But what do I know? I like cheese... :smoke:
