Okay, I've decided on shop to do my gears. I've also decided on 4:56 with my 32" tires which will be bumped up to 33" tires once these need replaced. The guy at the shop tried to talk me out of it and said that's too low and that he was just trying to look out for me. He suggested 4:10. I currently have 3:73 gearing and don't envision much change if I only go to 4:56. By the way my Ex. is the normal Auto w/od. I don't drive fast, 70 mph max. I do tow a trailer with 3 dirt bikes almost every weekend and I'm looking to cruise the desert with this. Not rock crawling or anything. SO, ONE LAST TIME BEFORE IT TOO LATE, are 4:56 gears a good choice for 33" tires for towing and cruising the desert if I don't plan on hauling ass on the roads?????? Also, this isn't my daily driver. Just what I take out at night and on the weekends.

THANKS A TON GUYS!!!!

My '97 Explorer came with 4.10 axles and 30" tires from Ford. If I was to up the tires to 33" the equivalent axle ratio would be 4.56 to maintain the same RPM per given speed as stock. My SOHC likes to be revved more than the OHV though so that might make some difference. I think based on what you said your uses are that 4.56 would be ideal.

I'm pretty sure on 4:56 gears. It's just that it would be a expensive mistake if they're too low and the shop kinda questioned my choice. Their reasoning is that they are running 4:56 on their Tahoe with 37" tires. Well I would think that the V8 in that vehicle has enough power to push that but my guttless old 4.0 in my '92 wouldn't push a set of 37" tires with 4:56. I checked some of the RPM calculators that I've found links to and they seem to put the RPMs in a good power window. Who knows, maybe my gas milage will improve by going from 3:73 to 4:56 cause it'll be closer to stock, well actually the RPMs will be a little higher but that should be good for towing.

I'd go with 4.56 if you're going to put 33's on AND tow. I went from 3.73 to 4.10 and it wasn't enough of a change for my 33's.

Go with the 4.56

The comparison to the V-8 powered tahoe isnt valid. Like you said the torque curve is in a different part of the rpm range.
Smaller engines usually need more gear since the power is higher in the rpm range- generally. Taking the experiences of this board 4.56 and 33's seem to be the ticket. If you were not going to tow, or not hit the trails, and planned to use it daily then I would consider the 4.10s since you have the auto trans. but from what you said it sounds to me like the 4.56s are more suitable.

Good luck.

4.56's and 33's cruise at about 2500 rpm at 65 on my 5speed navajo. It does 3000rpm around 75/80 mph.

So you might be around 2700 rpms at 65, until you get the 33's on.

32" tires with 4.10 gears and an a4ld tranny are at 2750 rpms at 75-80.. it isn't that bad.. with the 4.56 gears you will be at about 65ish at 2700rpms.. which is fine.. It all depends on hwo fast you have to drive.. around here the speed limit is 75 and I did drive 65 for a while (had no OD) and it drove me nuts..

I generally just cruise with the flow. My theory is that in my Civic I don't want to be seen so I haul ass. 95 MPH on the way home from work isn't uncommon. BTW I drive 95 miles on way to work so I drive fast just to make it not so long of a drive too. In my Explorer on the other hand I like to be seen in it so I just cruise. Usually with the flow 70mph max. So those RPM numbers sound good to me. The place I'm having do it is going to do it for $1000 even out the door. In SoCal that is a great price compared to other shops around here. It's a small fab shop and the mechanic used to be the head wrench for Team MacPherson Racing so he knows what he's doing. Anyways, thanks for the encouragement on the gear selection. I was all determined to do those gears and then the head mechanic who has A LOT of experience questioned my decision which made me question it also. Okay, 4:56 and 33's it is!!!

Khris, just wondering what shop you chose?

I'm curious on the shop... and the prices.... Do you have a 4wd? Do you have to replace the front gears too?

Michigander,
The shop and description are below. Yeah, mine is 4wd and you do have to replace teh front gears too unless you ABSOLUTELY won't ever use the front end cause that will cause serious damage if you don't replace both.

RangerX
Actually the Shop is called "Autostylz" up in Lake Froest (Orange County) A fellow employee is neighbors with the owner. I talked to the owner and he normally charges $550 per axle but since I know his neighbor he said he'd do it $500 each and if I paid cash he'd do it under the table(no tax). That's with the diffs in the vehicle. I'm sure it would be cheaper if you pulled them out and took them in, I just don't have the time. I think the shop is a two person setup. The mechanic used to be the head mechanic for Team MacPherson Racing. In fact they don't have room in their current shop for all the equipment and they said they would actually drive my Explorer over to the MacPherson race shop and do it there. He said I can drop it off in the afternoon and pick it up the next morning cause they'll do it over night!! I talked to them about doing a coil over custom fabbed front end and they said no problem and we'll talk about it when I bring the vehicle in. He said they're building a race truck right now and they are also doing a coil over Ranger right now that should get around 20" of travel. My coworker said they do really clean work and if you've seen any of MacPhersons race trucks he said this is the guy that designed and did a majority of the work on them. If this is true I expect their work to be top notch. My neighbor said they've built everything from show trucks that are lowered on air bags with a three link rear end set up to full on race trucks so it looks like they have teh experience. If you want I'll tell you more once I go to the shop and see teh stuff first hand? I'm hoping to get the vehicle in for the gears in the next week or two depending on my schedule.

By the way, that Rod Fantelli guy up in Ramona is still who I plan on having all my suspension work done by unless I find something better. I'm still months away from that so I'm still keeping my eyes and ears open for that. Still Fantelli is the best I've seen so far. He wants $4500 for a complete bolt on front end with Swa-A-Way coilovers, Air bump stops, extended Radius Arms w/Heim Joints, custom shock hoops with bracing attached across the engine compartment from one side to the other. He said this setup is basically built for race trucks and I should expect to be able to go out and pound through decent sized whoops and catch 2-3 feet of air and expect it to drive home straight. He said that he stands behind his work and if anything bends or breaks he'll fix it for the cost of parts. Labor is free. He also said that he'd let me use his equipment if I wanted to learn to do the stuff my self and fix or fab anything AI wanted in the future. Fantelli seems really cool and is at the top of my list so far (by the way, he used to work for autofab and all his stuff is almost identical. He's cheaper cause he charges $30/hour instead of Autofab's $60/hour) for suspension fabricators but, like I said. I'm still looking and shopping around and for instance I'm going to see what this "AutoStylz" place can do and what their price is like. So far their price is great for the gearing and if this guy is MacPherson's old head mechanic I'm expectiong their work to be awesome too.

Khris, I don't need any gear work, I was just curious. Always good to know of asny and all shop options. Let us know how it goes.

Rod Fantelli is still on my list, too, for a roll cage. Too bad I had to spend the saved up cage money on unexpected crap that came up. (sigh)
