Hi all, I have a1997 Explorer with driving issues. I was driving and my truck slipped out of gear. It started making a wining sound. It now only drives in 4x4 mode. Any ideas as to what it is and can be done to fix it? Thanks in advance.
If it only drives in 4x4 then your front axle is probably the only thing driving your truck. Check to see if your rear drive shaft is still connected. Does your parking brake work (not e-brake)
you may have sheared the pinion gear in your diff too.
I just rebuilt mine, the plastic bushings were shot on the range fork, which caused the gear to strip. Same symptoms, slipped out of gear, had to use 4LOW to get off the highway. Cost was 80 bucks, including a complete seal kit & shipping.
