I have a 2000 Explorer XLTthat I think has a bad left front universal joint. I would like to pull back the boot from the wheel size to look for metal shavings and pack it with grease (some lube will confirm if this is the problem or not),

How do I deal with the clamp?

Background information -
It started making noise a few weeks ago while on the highway with some binding that comes and goes. I can sometimes feel the vibrarion in the floor at highway speed so I keep it low. A mechanic suggested the front diff, but I want to look at the cheaper things first.

Welcome to this forum! Most of those clamps are made to be used one time (disposable), so you will have to cut it, and replace it. Always remove all of the old grease before you apply new grease so that they don't interact. Check this link for more information: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2190168
