Opinions on tire rotation

Ask FORD why they used 16" on AWD only.

4X4 are driven as a 2WD vehicle for all their life. Even when you engage the 4X4, that is in mud or snow to provide the needed slippage (to avoid binding).

AWD is driven as such on asphalt and the slippage is provided by the center differential and integral Viscous Coupling.

"Rim" size won't matter unless your talking about clearing brakes etc.

Its total rolling diameter of the tire/rim combo that matters which is why you try to keep the wear the same on AWD/full time 4wd vehicles (not just fords).

Because it was an up option that was standard with packages like V8 or Limited? It's not an uncommon practice to make certain options standard on higher trim levels or with certain options. These options that are made standard don't even have to have anything to do with whatever was added. It really didn't have anything to do with AWD. It's kind of like if you order a new F-150 with the FX appearance package. You can only get it with the big black wheels that are part of that package. You can't option different wheels and still get the same graphics.
