Gates controls the prices on their distributors. I don't think you can find a supplier for less than $129 for the 800 or the 850. I ordered mine from 4wheelparts.com because they were running a special until 12/31 which had free shipping on orders over $50 (like they sell anything for an Explorer less than $50). Ordering from them, I didn't have to pay sales tax, so I saved 8 1/4% over buying it locally. Putting it on my credit card at 9.9% means that I will probably still be paying for my "best deal on an Optima battery" long after I sell my truck. But the warranty will still be good on the battery.

Out here in the Pacific Northwest GI Joes has Optima batteries on sale for about $90 for the red-top (they have such as sale about every 6 months). And there is a Optima clone (made by the same folks as Optima) and a Texaco station has them locally - but I forgot what this battery is called. There is a web site for this clone Optima. The clone price is about 15-20% less than for the Optima as I recall.

Thanx for the replies...

I ended up getting my battery from the Optima website directly...no shipping..no handling charges...total of $135.
I tried looking up other places, but couldnt find a cheaper price...
I actually called a couple of car-security/sound places around here and they quoted my a price of $189 for the Red-Top. I was pretty stunned by that and told them they could keep it :-)

Thanx
