The sales guy said it would take ~6 weeks to receive the car. He called back today and said that if I sign a purchase agreement then it would likely arrive much faster (like in half the time). Anyone have experience with this? Pitfalls to look out for? Specifically, I'm concerned about the old bait-and-switch where I agree to buy the vehicle, then once it gets here the price has suddenly changed.

Thanks in advance for any insight/experiences.

6 weeks is about the average time, IF the dealer has an allocation for an Explorer during the next round of scheduling (every Thur morning). He was outright lying to you about getting it sooner if you sign a purchase agreement. There is no way to get one built in 3 weeks, even without the plant closing for the holidays next week. I would consider ordering from another dealer because of that. Most likely he's afraid of losing a sale if you find one now at another dealer before the ordered one arrives.

Thanks Riley. As he explained it, having a purchase agreement doesn't necessarily expedite the build process, but rather it allows the dealership to pull one that's earlier in the queue and is already being configured as I've specified. But if what the sales guy is telling me is just BS then I guess it doesn't make any difference.
