Alright - I own a '91 Explorer XLT 4dr, and I am trying to install a Kenwood head unit. I have disconnected my stock unit and wired up the proper harness. The problem is - the stock amp. I need to find it and disconnect it because it is no longer needed as my new HU is more powerful. But I cannot find the damned thing for the life of me. I've checked the entire dash (hopefully), rear compartments, even under the damned hood. Someone help me out - or let me know if there is a way to bypass this amp via wiring.

if you are sure that you have a stock amp.....
it is located behind the plastic panel on the passenger side in the rear cargo area. you have to remove all the clips and the seat belt bolt (i think T50) then remove the plastic panel. the amp will be over the wheel well. you should buy the amp bypass harness. it is a lot easier than splicing wires and figuring out which wires go where.

That was my next place to look but I was hesitant. I am sure i have the amp, as for the amp bypass - where can I buy this? Radioshack is close by but I am not sure if this would be too specific of an item.

you can order it from Crutchfield or you can go to Circuit City to pick one up. Best Buy might have it, but i know Radio Shack wont.

Alright - Thanks alot then bud =) Best Buy it is. 40 minute drive with no dash, my ash tray laying on the floor still hooked up and the stock radio dangling. I am up for it. Saved me lots of aggravation all of my friends and I are clueless about Explorers - I am the first to have one.

Why don't you just ignore the stock amp and rewire with better wire yourself from the head unit directly to the speakers? It'll be easier and a cleaner install in the long run.

That sounds like it would be better but I am really not that good with this yet. I already tore open the cargo area so for now I will stick with this plan. I found the amp but the wiring is a bit much so I am heading to get the Bypass Harness now. Ran into 1 little problem, i broke a few of the mold fittings, where might I get some replacements so I am not cruising with holes in my molds?

ps.s - the seat belt was a T50 -

you can buy a bag of the plastic clips from your ford dealer.
