I'm trying to improve the terrible gas mileage I'm getting. I did a Motorcraft long block last month. I had some driveability problems that are now repaired.

When I did the motor I put the BIG 2 row heavy duty radiator in my rig. The radiator is for an automatic trans, I have a manual trans. Now my coolant temp will not stabilize when I'm moving over 20mph. It comes up to the "N" and back down to cold. It does this continuously, it never levels out.

I'm wondering if my computer is also cycling between open and closed loop because of coolant temp, therefore running rich a good bit of the time. Any one know if the computer would go back and forth from closed loop to open loop?

sounds normal to me. Not sure what the "n" means. Sounds like the themo opens and the gauge drops. Figure its pretty hot where your at. Are you in Flag?

If Yellow knew what the "N" was he wouldn't have said it sounded normal, lol.
You should be able to run a huge 4 core radiator, without that result. It sounds like someone either put in a cold temp thermostat, or that your thermostat has gone bizerk. I'd replace it and see if everything levels off.

I wish I was in Flagstaff. I'm out on the Colorado River between Parker and Havasu. Its a hell hole here. Thats why I wanted the better radiator. Its 110*+ with Humidity. Heat index yesterday afternoon 126*.

Sounds like it has a 140 degree t-stat in it. I did the same things you did to my 94 ex and i put the 140 in and mine is the same as yours. It heats to the N, the t-stat opens and cools down. Kinda nice running cold in a Yuma summer but ive heard the 4.0 likes to run warmer.:D

I used the thermostat that came with my long block. It's a ford 198* thermostat. Where did you get a 140 T-Stat? I called Autozone, NAPA, Checker & a local parts store. All had only one listing for my '91 X a 190*.

Maybe my gauge is over sensitive. I'm taking the rig to my local Ford dealer Tuesday. They should be able to sort it out. I'm SOOOOOOOOOOO sick of ####ing with this POS I told the dealer to FIX IT, if they find a problem FIX IT.

If the bill gets too high I'll ditch the hunk of **** on them. They sold me the rolling trash heap and they may end up with it again for good.:rant::rant:

I wish I still had my Ranger:( Like an idiot, I got rid of a GREAT running 2.8L '85 Ranger. I had it for 3 years without a lick of trouble. Now Carma is getting me BIG TIME. I now have a total hunk of barely rolling, breaking down every day, lousy piece of stinking **** Explorer. This Explorer is FOR SURE a
Fuked Over Road Disaster

Man calm down.

Its not even called for.

I have had this problem before. I was replcaing tstats. Went through 3. Kept getting bad ones. Mine was just over heating by sticking open.

i just put a new radiator and 195 stat in and it does the same thing

i think a lot of it is just the gauge not being very accurate

before i replaced the rad and stat, the gauge would go over to the "L" then fall back down to before the "N" lol

I'm been meaning to buy a cheap aftermarket temp gauge just to see how much the temperature is fluctuating

I got the 140* t-stat for a Heep. Put the same one in my 84 BII and they both run cold in the summer. Actually last winter the BII didnt warm up enough for the heater to work.

You can pick up a cheap infared thermometer cheaply. I got one for $20 (I saw it for $10 when on sale)..

I used it to check the water temp before I added an after market temp gauge.

I'm suspecting an electrical issue with the gauge circuit. Disconnect the sending unit. Put an ohm meter on it with some long leads and drive it. If you get a consistant change in the reading (not jumping up and down) as the engine warms up, then then it's not a mechanical problem. It's somewhere between the connector and the gauge.

If you had any clue what a nightmare this truck has been you would not say calm down. I got this truck almost a year ago to the day. Check out the list of parts I've had to replace in the last 12 months

Engine (Blown Head Gasket & Rod Knock)
Rear end ( Seized)
Clutch (wore out)
Alternator (Bearing Seized)
Power Steering pump and lines (BIG TIME leak)
Water Pump ( replaced with engine)
Radiator ( Leaking)
Fan & Fan Clutch ( Previous owner Welded it to run full time)
A/C Compressor, Accumulator, Orifice Tube (Compressor puked wasted entire system)
A/C Hoses ( Rusted to the point of leaking)
Exhaust "Y" Pipe ( Rusted off at Exhaust Manifolds Big leak)
Fuel Injectors ( Clogged )
Battery ( Fried would not crank over)
Starter ( Seized bendix would not release)
IAC ( Severe Idle Problems)
Spark Plugs ( Wasted, Wore Out, 3 Different brands When I got it)
Plug Wires (Disintegrated when I replaced Plugs)
O2Sensor ( Rust welded to "Y" Pipe)
Lift Gate Supports
Stereo ( Fried 2 weeks after I got the truck, Filled truck with smoke)
Dash Bulbs ( 2 Burned out)
Both rear window regulators Puked within 2 weeks of getting truck

With all these problems and more, and a truck that still is not right, even JOBE would be ready to sledge hammer this truck.
