I have an 02 explorer xlt 4wd, my wife just informed me that she noticed the overdrive light flashing. I took the car for a ride and sure enough it starts to flash maybe after about 5 minutes of driving, also I noticed them when I come to a somewhat harder than usual stop I hear a clunk in the rear of the car. Any ideas? Please help I'm concerned that we are causing more damage by driving the vehicle thanks..

I too have a 2002 XLT 4WD. Page 13 of the owner's manual states:

"If the light does not come on or the light flashes steadily, have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible, as damage to the transmission could occur".

I'd say stop driving it if possible, and get it somewhere to be checked.

Good luck!

Well I took the truck into the ford dealership where I purchased it from and they cam back with a $640 estimate. The service writer said that the problem on the vehicle is a bad transmission solenoid body. He said that the vehicle is fine and that this solenoid has just gone bad and that it will not cause any further damage to the transmission. So he basically said that there is no real need to fix it unless the light bothers my eyes.

I am taking his advise since the truck is running great otherwise however I will be buying the part eventually and having it installed elsewhere since the cost of the part is only 290.00.

Just make sure you get it fixed. Going cheap on a transmission job isn't exactly the best decision as the engine and transmission are vital/expensive things. Just my opinion.

What does a transmission solenoid body do? If it's not necessary, why is it there to begin with? That worries me!
