01 xlt 4x4 4L SOHC. starting to overheat every once in a while.. was fine for the first 144K miles. then all of a sudden the temp climbed then dropped to regular position. about 30 miles later same thing.. First though,, thermostat is starting to go bad. SO i replaced it.. was fine for a week then same thing temp rose the dropped again.... I can not find a leak, Oil is oil, the anti freeze is anti freeze. so I dont think I have a head problem, But was told that the outer edge of the gasket may be leaking so it would blow out of the motor and fall wear ever and you may not see it in the oil or antifreeze...If the head gasket needs to be replaced,,, what the damage for something like that ??? the Cost..I mean.......

just email me direct..if you want.

Thanks for reading it.. this trk is starting to make me very tired......

With no fluid mixing, if neither fluid level has dropped to an excessively low level, it is not a leak of either of them. How high did the temperature rise? Is there any chance you're running straight antifreeze and it's 100F temperature there?

See if you can cause the problem with the vehicle sitting parked and idling, OR, pull over at a safe/convenient location and check to see if the fan is running which it should be till it drops to a lower temperature.

Unless I've overlooked something, and assuming the new thermostat is good, what remains would be fan motor itself, fan relay, temperature sensor, fuse or wiring break (or contact corrosion/looseness on any of these electrical items), radiator shot/creating clog, water pump seized (should notice belt problem slipping or breaking). If the fan is running at a seemingly normal speed then the electrical can be ruled out - BUT I mean when it is running hot, not just if the fan is running sometimes in case it's an intermittent fault.

It would be better NOT to post your email address, spambots will harvest it and spam you for years in the future. Instead, let people send you PM messages to your email with this link which is on your member profile page:
