Well, it happened to me. This weekend, on the way home from a long road trip to Mammoth Mountain, my O/D off light began flashing, yet shifting was smooth as usual. Coming to a stop off the freeway I noticed a heavy "clunk" as it downshifted to first. The clunk only happened twice then all was well again. The light went away when I turned the car off, then on again. I did a search here and saw that with only 60,000 miles on the odometer and having flushed my tranny twice since new, it is likely that the problem is electrical (TPS maybe or shift solenoid). Anyway, I took it to the dealer in Beverly Hills that I halfway trust for a scan. The service person also said it was a common problem, usually electrical. We'll see. I lost sleep over this last night, after reading the $2000+ transmission stories from this same problem. I am just somewhat relieved that the tranny shifted as normally very well this morning. That's my story for today.

Anyone have anymore insight into this issue?

Thanks

The dealer just called, said it was the torque converter solenoid starting to "stick." Quote was $345. Does that sound right?

Mine has been doing that for the last 42000 miles, so if it is 'starting' to stick, it is sure taking it's sweet time. The light usually comes on when I'm off-roading and pushing hard, or driving very slow pulling a heavy load. Disconnecting the battery resets, and the clunking stops. No other problems, and 69000 on the trans.

Wish I had know that before I got it fixed. Grrrrr...

The torque convertor solenoid probably had a defective "pintle" on it. I've seen them go bad and either keep the torque convertor on or stop it from working. Ford has a new improved solenoid. The solenoid is actually easy to change. Try asking the Ford dealer for the old part so you can actually see if it's tip is distorted. They (dealer) probably pulled codes and came with a code pertaining to the torque convertor.

Resetting the computer would have not helped with your problem.
