While driving my 98 Ranger, my overdrive light will begin to flash on and off and will shift funny when slowing down. This does not happen all the time, however it is happening more and more as time goes by. Dealer says that it is an indicator that the transmission is failing. The only way to stop the overdrive light from flashing is to stop and turn the motor off, then is stays off for a while. The transmission works fine when the overdrive light is not flashing. The transmission fluid is in good shape and the truck has 117,000 thousand miles.

Any ideas?

The dealer is right your transmission IS sick, but you need to find out why before handing over a few $K to them. Get a code reader and find out what codes come up and then do a search on this great forum. I'm sure you will find the help you need. I would definitely do this ASAP before things get worse.
