when the overdrive light is flashing that means that there is something wrong with the transmission. It is basically the check engine light for your tranny. Did you try pulling any codes?

i dont know what you mean by codes???
if the problem stops after i restart car should i be ok????
should i drive with overdrive off for now on?

No. You shouldn't drive it at all until you determine the problem. You could be turning a minor problem into a very, very expensive one.

1995 Limited Overdrive Problem

My od light is flashing on the dash along with the check engine light. The speedometer and odometer don't work either. I replaced the variable speed sensor on the transmission, but the problem still exists. Ford advised that there are "other" sensors that may be the cause, but would not give any more info. Aftermarket manuals dont give much help either. Am I the only frustrated person with this problem? Any help would be preferable to the FORD solution.

We need codes to help you. Where and which sensor specifically did you replace? I believe that sensor is in the transfer case.

I feel your pain man, hopefully this forum can help you, it's very irresponsible for a company to tell it's customer " we dont know", and leave it at that, thats bad business, an i hate it, i get it all the time. i hope you get it together, mine only flashed on a few times after 40mile highways trips, im hoping it's just the long trip itself triggering something... my trucks seems to shift fine, and really doesnt seem to have any problems. i really cant afford to have a problem right now.

WHERE SHOULD I GO TO GET IT SCANNED GUYS? for free?

I get my truck scanned at AutoZone(for free) but i really dont know if they have the best equipment.

dam i'm a noob! i'll take it up there tommarow and share the results, i pray its ok. hopefully i just need to change fluid.

Is this true, will Autozone scan codes for free? I'm having the "flashing OD" issue but don't wanna buy a scanner.

As far as the odometer/spedo not working, We are currently dealing with this problem. Upon close inspection of the speedometer gear we found the teeth were worn in several spots causing the issue, once in a blue moon it would catch and my speedometer would jump to like 10mph then it would be lost again. We couldn't get the gear from autozone or any of the other parts stores, and I ended up getting this off ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/SPEEDOMETER...rd|Model:Explorer&hash=item20cc89fda3&vxp=mtr we are currently waiting for it to arrive and I am confident it will solve that particular problem. Now we are trying to figure out exactly what needs replacing for the overdrive off blink/ hard downshift after driving over 55 thing. Am searching the forum now for what exactly to look for.
