What usually causes this problem? My 1995 Explorer auto trans likes to run at 4,000 RPM at about 40MPH and then once the accelerator pedal is released, then shifts down into a lower less engine killing gear and stays there. am i maybe missing a gear?

I'm really hoping it's not a band in there.

The O/D light is flashing. I'm just curious. I'm going to take it and get it scanned since know a transmission shop who will do it for free for me

The flashing TCIL is usually the torque converter clutch, but your symptoms sound a little different. Go ahead and get it on a good scanner.

I think there are different flash patterns for different problems.

On my old XLT I had the shift motor disconnected, the light would flash 4 times at a regular interval.

ill see if i cant see the number of flashes it does. it seems to have all the gears, so it's not skipping 2nd gear or anything...which is good

the only other thing wrong is that darn blend door motor (i think) were getting pounded with that blizzard here in Traverse City and it was a cold, yet not-dramatic ride home in 4 wheel tonight
