So this is what happend...was driving home when I heard a weird noise almost like a mix of a steam engine and a tie down strap fluttering in the wind coming from the motor and it got worst when I hit pushed on the gas. About 5 seconds later my engine oil bottomed out, temp needle shot up and lost all acceleration (motor still on but pushing gas pedal did nothing). Coasted to side of the road and started checking. What I found was the plastic idle pully had locked up and the belt melted it and locked up, nothing was spinning and the radiator had cracked. So I took the belt off and started it up and I can still hear the sound. I also found a little oil in the coolant and a little coolant in the oil. But other then the weird sound, bad pully and radiator nothing else seems wrong.

My questions are A) what could this sound be from? B) could I have a blown head gasket, cracked head, or could it just be a cracked/blown intake or gasket? I don't have any smoke coming from tailpipe or smell burning antifreeze/oil so I don't think I have a bad head or gasket, but by no means am I a professional. Any help would be wonderful.

Also this is a 2000 mountaineer 5.0 ohv.

Don't know about the sound, but it seems likely you've blown a head gasket if there's water in the oil and oil in the water.

Your water pump bearings might be shot. Can you wobble the fan? I also agree if you are mixing oil and water you have blown a head gasket.

I was told by a buddy that a blown intake gasket could mix the oil and coolant is that true? Still trying to figure out what the sound is...
