2012 Ford Explorer 2.0
Hello,

I'm new here and I apologize if i'm posting this in the wrong place. If so, please let me know.

I have a 2012 Ford Explorer with the 2.0 Ecoboost engine.

I recently had a check engine light come on and when i used my scanner it showed the P0299 error code. After some research this best sums up what is most likely the problem (I think).

http://www.obd-codes.com/p0299

I visually checked every part of the intake air system I could find to see if there were any cracks or loose hoses. They all seemed to be just fine.

Based on this link and other things i read about the P0299 error I'm pretty sure the engine light has something to do with the turbo. I noticed both today and the last time I drove the explorer up a really long & steep hill the turbo never came on. The car was seriously underpowered driving up the hill. Today, after driving up the hill is when the engine light came on.

Are there any suggestions on my next step before i take it to the dealer? I'm fairly certain the turbo is covered under the extended powertrain warranty but I'd like to exhaust the other options if possible. Any help?

Also, my windshield wipers are stuck on the lowest intermitent setting when i have them in the off position. They work correctly in every mode except they will not turn off when I turn the switch to "off". So when it is sunny outside i'm constantly driving with my wipers on... I think I have to have the switch replaced?

Thanks!

Yes, replace the switch. Easy to do and cheap through the Ford discount sites. Benny on here is one in the Vendor section of the forum.

Can't help you with the CEL.

First post here.

Bought a 2012 Ford Explorer Limited with 2.0 Ecoboost with 140,000 miles. Didn't have my code reader with me when I bought the truck...

Dreaded P2099 Turbo Underboost Code - when I checked the codes.

Checked all the hoses and electrical connections - they look to be in good condition.

I bought a relatively expensive Scanner by Launch.

When reading Live data, it shows the wastegate valve open at 55% when the truck is at Idle.

As I accelerate the wastegate valve % went up to 75%. I'm assuming that this ready is % open.

Why would it be open so much at 3000 RPM?

Replaced the Turbo Wastegate Solenoid and the Turbo Bypass valves...P0299 remains.

I don't hear any rattle or any whining coming from the turbo or the truck.

The truck has very bad lag when I start moving from a dead stop.

I bought access to ALLDATA and the troubleshooting process is 29 pages.

Not sure how to check items Ignition On, Engine off when the truck times out after 5 minutes to save battery life.

I'm going to smoke test the hose from the entrance of the intercooler through to the throttle body to see if there is a leak.

Any other things that I should test before I go through the "official troubleshooting process"?

Thanks, in advance.

I had the same code but with the 3.5 turbo and I found that the wastegate linkage on the front turbo kept slipping off. See if you can move it by hand and if it feels loose. I ultimately ended up replacing the turbo because it was original with high miles. I imagine at 140k, that your turbo is probably in similar shape unless its been replaced or rebuilt.

On mine, the turbo broke right at the waste gate valve, preventing it from closing fully. Took me eight hours to change it as it's packed in behind the engine. For me, the code would come and go for a year. Once I changed the turbo, it was like a brand new engine. I wish I hadn't waited so long.

When I talked to a Ford mechanic, he indicated that needing a new turbo at 100,000 wasn't uncommon.

Good luck
